friday (or: three days to monday)

Friday November 30, 2007

My brain is slowly starting to die. Or dying, if you will. I knew this, but did not realize it until now. Heh. Little things like suddenly losing 25 cents in nickels on a countertop (whoever stole it was a fool – $130 in twenties and fifties, right next to them), or considering today’s math homework, visualizing the assignment, three rows of three problem numbers each, and concluding with the total six. Then later looking at the same assignment, seeing two rows of three and one of two, and thinking “ah, splendid – only eight”.

… My roommate just laughed. In his sleep.

2:35am, I’ve just come back from the vending machines and am about to embark on that noble adventure known as Math Homework. My desk is somewhat cleaner than it was yesterday (meaning that there are only two keyboards left, and the three spare hard drives are now on the shelf), but does feature the following:

a server called ‘emo’
Which really should be a film with poor box office performance that rapidly develops a cult following subsequent to its (HD)DVD/Blu-ray release, for no apparent reason.

At any rate, the server in question has a Pentium 4 (2.4ghzish), 512mb memory and a newshiny 400gb sata. Total investment: almost exactly $400. Which is more than it could have been, yeah, but not that bad either. It’s turned into a bit of a project for ijiti and me, arhhook being the most recent addition to our fledgling team. Granted, we have no goals. But as my Tech Comm class has proven time and time again, a team doesn’t need goals. Indeed, nearly entire class was playing Armagetron today. Even the prof had a go at it: “Well, it looks like everyone’s playing Tron. … I want a turn.”

But yes. Check out http at emo.ath.cx. There’s not a whole ton (metric) open for public access just yet, I’m afraid – the fileserver is locked (leave a comment if you have a really creative reason for wanting in) and… yeah, that’s pretty much it. Except for Armagetron. :) Download the client and away we go.

comics
Though just two, actually – a print of Traversing the Luminferous Aether and one of Epilogue, both from Dresden Codak. If you’re not familiar, scan through the Wikipedia article on the technological singularity before beginning your visit. That’s how I was taught.

By the way, did you know there was a Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence?

In the coming decades, humanity will likely create a powerful artificial intelligence. SIAI exists to handle this urgent challenge, both the opportunity and the risk.

A powerful mission statement, to be sure. But as long as I’m thinking about it, I’ve thrown up PDF versions of Luminiferous Aether and Epilogue wanting a nice print-friendly version. As well as a biggered vector version of Threadless’s Now That’s Dope. Knock yourself out. <unrelated>By the way, check out Rice Boy.</unrelated>

uncooked ramen
It’s better than it sounds.

miscellany

  • Two PC133 256mb sticks that the server can’t use (one day I’ll learn to recognize these on sight)
  • Mountain Dew (otherwise known as Sweet Nectar Of Life)
  • Quite a nice IDE cable (which I need to return to its owner)
  • A small toy car, which was embedded in a Kinder brand chocolate that my roommate gave me. The irony is that the car includes a choking hazard warning.
  • GParted and Ubuntu livecds

And I think that’s all. Unless you have need for a Stupid Filter.

It’s 3:00am. I shall now begin my calc homework.

Cheers –
