This gap between posts is irregular, to be clear. Things are happening.

But, in an effort to produce a Thing, distinct and in isolation, I now present this:

lucky-fm is an effort to do something at least casually useful with Last.fm’s track.findbyaudiofeatures API, apparently unrecognized as it is. I ran into this by accident while thumbing through my feedreader - they made something similar for Spotify, and as far as I can tell that’s all anyone’s said about it.

I’m not a data guy by trade, but the potential of this stuff is inspiring.

Some of us compulsively collect this kind of thing. This population segment has an intersection with those who automate the hell out of everything, why not.

Bit of a departure from the previous set; the usual disclaimer applies about still getting my bearings.

In light of that, and in an effort to gain some ground, this pretty closely follows the standard tenants of generic house. Sans any kind of ending, and anything in the middle: this is a one minute intro, and a bassline that will probably be useful later.

So it turns out that replicating purely intuitive timing/dynamics is a challenge. Particularly when doing everything with one of these and one of these. (I miss my piano.)

This piece will be around ten minutes when finished, and while I offer no apologies for what follows (much knob-fiddling remains, particularly in the first section), it is a step in the right general direction. Do ignore the last few measures; they slipped in inadvertently while rendering.

Progress is progress. And time-consuming; these two-minute clips have each been taking on the order of three hours to build. Part of that is just ferreting out the right buttons to push and knobs to twist, but most is because this approach is still some distance from fully intuitive. Which is kind of the same thing.

More time is required. Fortunately, this is a lot of fun.

I feel better about this one.

As typically happens when I start something new and independent, time is lost to the wind, and suddenly it’s 3am. I’ve got a startup in the works, happily consuming my mental bandwidth; with any luck I’ll be able to publish something on this soon. It’s nice to have cofounders once in a while.
